Lalibela is excited to announce that we will soon be visited by one of the world’s top chess players.

Levon Grigori Aronian is an Armenian chess player who, in 2014, was ranked number 2 in the world by FIDE and had an Elo rating of 2830, making him the 4th highest rated player in history. He has competed and won a number of international chess championships and tournaments, including the prestigious FIDE World Cup in 2005 and 2017.

Lalibela is eagerly awaiting his visit – he and his wife will be joining us for two nights from the 12th of January.

We are not only excited at the prospect of sharing Lalibela’s incredible wildlife and exciting safari experience with this chess Grandmaster, but also excited that he will be sharing some of his incredible skills with us.

As we’ve mentioned a few times now on the blog, Lalibela runs a number of outreach programmes within our local community, Seven Fountains. Included in these projects is a chess programme. We run an after school chess club, where young children can learn and play chess. Mr Aronian will be visiting our community centre on Monday where he will play and talk to our aspiring chess players.

We are extremely excited about his visit and grateful that our Seven Fountain’s young chess players will have this special experience.
